20/20 Focus on JESUS

20/20 Focus on JESUS
Each day we need to keep our eyes focused on JESUS - 20/20! I am sorry that I did not continue this blog into the beginning of 2021. Nine months passed by before I was convicted to return to this blog and encourage us to look at JESUS, with clear vision, via a daily scripture reading. Yellow highlights are names/descriptions of JESUS that we'll add to the list on the right.

2020 for JESUS - Day 323: JESUS is JESUS... BLESSED... POOR IN SPIRIT... MOURNING OVER SIN... MEEK... RIGHTEOUSNESS... MERCIFUL... PURE IN HEART... GOD... PEACEMAKER... PERSECUTED BECAUSE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS... INSULTED AND PERSECUTED FALSELY... THE SALT OF THE EARTH... THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD... YOUR LIGHT... GREAT IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN... YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS... THE LORD... THE GREAT KING... RIGHTEOUS...

Here, as JESUS begins HIS "Sermon on the Mount", HE is describing how HE lives, as HE tells the people how to live.  HE wants us to follow in his footsteps and live like HE did!

Matthew 5

Now when JESUS saw the crowds, HE went up on a mountainside and sat down. HIS disciples came to HIM,

and HE began to teach them.

The Beatitudes

HE said:

BLESSED are the POOR IN SPIRIT,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
BLESSED are those who MOURN,

    for they will be comforted.
BLESSED are the MEEK,

for they will inherit the earth.
BLESSED are those who hunger and thirst for RIGHTEOUSNESS,

    for they will be filled.
BLESSED are the MERCIFUL,

for they will be shown mercy.
BLESSED are the PURE IN HEART,

    for they will see GOD.
BLESSED are the PEACEMAKERs,

for they will be called children of GOD.
10 BLESSED are those who are PERSECUTED BECAUSE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 BLESSED are you when people INSULT YOU, PERSECUTE YOU and FALSELY say all kinds of evil against you because of ME.

12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light

13 “You are THE SALT OF THE EARTH. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 “You are THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

16 In the same way, let YOUR LIGHT shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify YOUR FATHER in heaven.

The Fulfillment of the Law

17 ‘Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called GREAT IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.

20 For I tell you that unless YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Murder

21 ‘You have heard that it was said to the people long ago,

‘You shall not murder,  and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’

22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

23 ‘Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

25 ‘Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.

26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Adultery

27 ‘You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Divorce

31 ‘It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’

32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Oaths

33 ‘Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago,

‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to THE LORD vows you have made.’

34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is GOD’s throne;

35 or by the earth, for it is HIS footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of THE GREAT KING.

36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.

37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;

anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

Eye for Eye

38 ‘You have heard that it was said,

‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’

39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.

40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.

41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.

42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Love for Enemies

43 ‘You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

45 that you may be children of YOUR FATHER IN HEAVEN. HE causes HIS sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the RIGHTEOUS and the unrighteous.

46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?

47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

48 Be perfect, therefore, as your HEAVENLY FATHER is perfect.

2020 for JESUS - Day 322: JESUS is JESUS... THE SON OF GOD... GOD... THE LORD YOUR GOD... A GREAT LIGHT... A LIGHT... THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM...

Matthew 4

Then JESUS was led up by THE SPIRIT into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

And after fasting forty days and forty nights, HE was hungry.

And the tempter came and said to HIM,

‘If you are THE SON OF GOD, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’

But HE answered, “It is written,

‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of GOD.’

Then the devil took HIM to the holy city and set HIM on the pinnacle of the temple

and said to HIM,

‘If you are THE SON OF GOD, throw yourself down, for it is written,

“‘HE will command HIS angels concerning you,’

and

‘On their hands they will bear YOU up,
lest YOU strike YOUR foot against a stone.’

JESUS said to him,

‘Again it is written,

‘You shall not put THE LORD YOUR GOD to the test.’

Again, the devil took HIM to a very high mountain and showed HIM all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

 And he said to HIM,

‘All these I will give YOU, if YOU will fall down and worship me.’

10 Then JESUS said to him,

‘Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

‘You shall worship THE LORD YOUR GOD
and HIM only shall you serve.’”

11 Then the devil left HIM, and behold, angels came and were ministering to HIM.

JESUS Begins His Ministry

12 Now when HE heard that John had been arrested, HE withdrew into Galilee.

13 And leaving Nazareth HE went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,

14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

15 ‘The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people dwelling in darkness

    have seen A GREAT LIGHT,
and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,
on them A LIGHT has dawned.”

17 From that time JESUS began to preach, saying,

‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

JESUS Calls the First Disciples

18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, HE saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

19 And HE said to them,

‘Follow ME, and I will make you fishers of men.’

20 Immediately they left their nets and followed HIM.

21 And going on from there HE saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and HE called them.

22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed HIM.

JESUS Ministers to Great Crowds

23 And HE went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.

24 So HIS fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought HIM all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and HE healed them.

25 And great crowds followed HIM from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

2020 for JESUS - Day 321: JESUS is THE LORD... GOD... JESUS... RIGHTEOUSNESS... MY BELOVED SON...

Matthew 3

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of THE LORD;
    make HIS paths straight.’”

Now John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.

Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him,

and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them,

‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

And do not presume to say to yourselves,

‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, GOD is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 ‘I baptize you with water for repentance, but HE who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. HE will baptize you with THE HOLY SPIRIT and fire.

12 HIS winnowing fork is in HIS hand, and HE will clear HIS threshing floor and gather HIS wheat into the barn, but the chaff HE will burn with unquenchable fire.’

The Baptism of Jesus

13 Then JESUS came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

14 John would have prevented HIM, saying,

‘I need to be baptized by YOU, and do YOU come to me?’

 15 But JESUS answered him,

‘Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all RIGHTEOUSNESS.’ Then he consented.

16 And when JESUS was baptized, immediately HE went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to HIM,  and HE saw THE SPIRIT OF GOD descending like a dove and coming to rest on HIM;

17 and behold, a voice from heaven said,

‘This is MY BELOVED SON with WHOM I am well pleased.’”

2020 for JESUS - Day 320: JESUS is KING OF THE JEWS... THE CHRIST... A RULER... SHEPHERD... THE CHILD... THE LORD... MY SON... A NAZARENE...

Matthew 2

The Visit of the Wise Men

Now after JESUS was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem,

saying, ‘Where is HE WHO has been born KING OF THE JEWS? For we saw HIS star when it rose and have come to worship HIM.’

 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;

and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where THE CHRIST was to be born.

They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come A RULER
who will SHEPHERD my people Israel.’

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.

And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for THE CHILD, and when you have found HIM, bring me word, that I too may come and worship HIM.’

After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where THE CHILD was.

10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

11 And going into the house, they saw THE CHILD with Mary HIS mother, and they fell down and worshiped HIM. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

The Flight to Egypt

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of THE LORD appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Rise, take THE CHILD and HIS mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for THE CHILD, to destroy HIM.’

14 And HE rose and took THE CHILD and HIS mother by night and departed to Egypt

15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what THE LORD had spoken by the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I called MY SON.

Herod Kills the Children

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men.

17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

18 ‘A voice was heard in Ramah,
    weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.’

The Return to Nazareth

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of THE LORD appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20 saying, ‘Rise, take THE CHILD and HIS mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought THE CHILD's life are dead.’

21 And he rose and took THE CHILD and HIS mother and went to the land of Israel.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee.

23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that HE would be called A NAZARENE.
